Balance Disorders
and Dizziness

"Dizziness provoked by movement and motion is treated" - Equilibrium and dizziness specialist, Dr. Philippe Lorin
Dizziness is considered the most common cause of recourse to a doctor whatever his specialty is. In most cases, vertigo is a symptom of vestibular dysfunction, more rarely a neurological pathology, sometimes a more general illness. By objectifying the real cause of vertigo, it is possible to offer effective curative treatment and prevent recurrence.
The sensation, the impression that the earth moves under our feet or that the objects revolve around us is called vertigo. This state may be accompanied by a feeling of exhaustion, vomiting or nausea, sweating. This phenomenon is frequently observed with motion sickness common among children.

structure of the vestibular apparatus

In adulthood, vertigo is a sign of dysfunction of the vestibular apparatus.
Balance disorders occur not only while standing but also while lying down. Many patients experience instability under their feet, drunkenness, sometimes a real impression of rotational motion during which objects can fly.
Balance disorders can have many causes.
Among the most common, we can distinguish:
Affections of the inner ear
Some neurological disorders
Orthostatic hypotension (common in the elderly)
Muscular disorders
Taking certain medications

Each person has experienced dizziness or balance disorders at least once in his life. There are also some people who constantly suffer from these problems (every six months, once a month, or even every day). We offer you to answer the following questions in order to understand whether vertigo (dizziness) and loss of balance are reasons for seeing a doctor.

Do you often experience sudden episodes of nausea, vomiting, loss of balance?
These attacks are also symptoms of diseases of the inner ear. Their feature is that they begin unexpectedly, and it is impossible to predict them. Often these attacks are accompanied by the congestion of the ear. The cause of nausea, loss of balance can be the inner ear trauma. Consultation with a specialist is mandatory in this case.

Do you often feel dizzy?
Do you often feel dizzy?
Frequent dizziness can be a symptom of serious diseases, such as ear infection, mental disorders, insufficient blood flow to the brain, hypotension, a medication side effect, and vestibular system dysfunction.
Even if you seldom experience dizziness, this is also a reason to consult a specialist. The earlier the better.

Do you suffer from motion sickness?
Do you suffer from motion sickness?
Motion sickness (sea sickness) is known in medicine as kinetosis. It occurs when there are conflicts among senses when the eye sees one thing, the body experiences another and the inner ear feels something else. Our brain is unable to pick up all these signals, which may cause dizziness and vomiting. The role of the inner is quite important in this process.
Motion sickness can be a variant of the norm. Contact a specialist to examine the inner ear.

Consult a specialist to establish a cause of vertigo and offer appropriate treatment.
